Dr. Chavira-Prado is a cultural anthropologist. She received a Ph.D. from UCLA, where her specialization was: Latinos in the U.S. & public policy (immigration, education, health). Prior to filling the position of Coordinator for ODE, Dr. chavira-Prado was a consultant/trainer in cultural competency. She has worked at De Paul University, Michigan State University and Mansfield University; been a researcher of the processes driving diversity in southern Illinois for over 20 years; and served as a consultant/researcher/analyst for the Census Bureau. Dr. Chavira-Prado’s previous association with SIU was as a visiting asst. professor in the Anthropology Department, where she developed/introduced the first course on Latino cultures. The bilingual (Spanish and English) Dr. Chavira-Prado is the Founder and Director of the first Mexican cultural dance troupe in southern Illinois.
